Dr. Heran's Background

Dr. Navraj S. Heran is a member of the Neurosurgery and Interventional Radiology Departments.  He sees patients with cranial and spinal neurosurgical problems with a focus on adult and pediatric cerebrovascular diseases such as aneurysms, AVMs and stroke, as well as head and neck vascular disorders.

Dr. Heran grew up in the Lower Mainland and did his medical school and neurosurgery residency at the University of British Columbia.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  He practiced as an attending Neurosurgeon at Royal Columbian and Eagle Ridge Hospitals prior to embarking upon a fellowship in Neuroendovascular Surgery, also known as Interventional Neuroradiology. This training was conducted at the Hymen-Newman Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN) at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.  Dr. Heran trained there for two years under the tutelage of Dr. Alejandro Berenstein, a world-renowned pioneer in the field, gaining extensive experience in the management of complex cerebrovascular disorders.

His other interests outside of general and vascular neurosurgery lie in minimally invasive treatment of tumours such as pituitary tumours with the aid of endoscopic and microscopic guidance.  He has expertise in neuronavigation, having trained with and used the most common stereotactic devices on the market.  These less invasive and more efficient techniques allow safer treatments for patients.

He has presented at national and international meetings and authored articles appearing in such professional publications as The Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, The American Journal of Neuroradiology, Pediatric Neurosurgery and Neurology.
