What is a Stroke?

There are two types of stroke: those from hemorrhage and those from blockage of blood vessels.  Most strokes are from blockage of blood vessels within the brain and are called ischemic strokes.  The end result from both types of strokes is impairment in neurological function, resulting in weakness, language problems, problems with memory amongst others.

What kind of treatments are available?

Treatment involves prevention of recurrent stroke, minimizing further brain injury, and rehabilitation of the stroke victim to allow reintegration into a normal life.

From a surgical perspective, if a stroke is recognized early, in addition to medical treatments, the removal or mechanical destruction of "clots" causing blockages can be beneficial (See Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting).  Also, for prevention, narrowed blood vessels can be made bigger allowing better blood flow.  Operations can be performed on the blood vessels in the neck as well as in the brain.  Techniques involve the removal of debris or the placement of stents similar to those used in the heart for patients with "heart attacks".
